Amarillo and Potter county are currently being served by two packet nodes, POTTER and AMAPCG.
The POTTER node is located at the KVII-TV transmitter site, several miles north of Amarillo. The site can be considered "remote"!
The following photo shows the site's location, in relation to Amarillo:
The antenna, a Comet GP-3 (see below) is mounted upside-down on the tower.
The POTTER node equipment is located next to the 146.94 voice repeater:
Helping us install the equipment on May 4, 2010 were (left, below) Charlie, W5CEH, and (right) Maury, W5UGQ. Between them is KVII-TV's new digital transmitter:
POTTER communicates with AMAPCG, DALLAM, OLDHAM, MOORE, ARMSTG, GRAY, and AMAETK, Amarillo's 2m/40m PACKET Gateway.
The AMAPCG node is located in north-central Amarillo, eight blocks north of the old Northwest Texas Hospital buildings. It serves not only as a 'back-up' should POTTER go down, but also to saturate PACKET coverage in and south of the city.
Inside the building: Motorola MaraTrac sending 80 watts to the antenna; MFJ 1270 TNC; Astron RS-50 power supply.
Having exclusive use of the only antenna on the N5LTZ Monopole, the site is fairly quiet. But it is also prone to electrical failures, and there is no working AC in the building at this time.
AMAPCG communicates with POTTER, ARMSTG, GRAY, FRITCH, BOR, BFD, MOORE, the AMAETK 2m/40m Gateway, and sometimes DALLAM and OLDHAM.
Thanks for visiting!
